How to Protect Your Energy Around People Who Trigger You

This is a simple and super-effective strategy to feel more peaceful around people.

Relationships are one of the most wonderful, and challenging parts of being human! We might be ok with most people, but what about that one person who gets under your skin and brings up all the icky emotions?

Years ago there was a person who triggered such strong feelings of anxiety in me because of how she would lash out at people with anger. Just the thought of being around her would make me uncomfortable.

Learning this strategy changed everything! After doing this a few times, one day she walked into the room and I suddenly realised I felt calm. No emotion!

I’ve used this strategy for years and shared it with hundreds of people.

Give it a try – it really works wonders!

  1. What a simple strategy for a lot of siruations. I will be practising it so that I can apply it in the future. It fells like being wrapped in loving arms and is harming no-body. Thank you Kelly

  2. Thanks Kelly I will start to practice this I have this problem with my ex husband whenever we are in a situation where we are together I always feel uncomfortable and anxious as he is constantly putting me down and makes me feel unwelcome so I try not to be around him which sometimes means I miss out on spending time with my grandchildren.I will let you know how it goes.Thank you 😊

  3. Thank you Kelly. I do a lot to help people, simply because it is my nature BUT I never let myself get in the position of being “taken for a ride”. I am 94 years old, live in a lovely Lifecare place and have many opportunities to bring some joy to lots of people, but I do know when to say NO! Thankfully my mind is in tip top condition so I can gauge situations. I am so blessed to be in this position of helping out. A smile, a hug,a laugh, etc are small ways we can bring joy to others who are less fortunate than ourselves.

  4. Thank you Kelly ? I’m a school teacher and have to deal with more and more aggressive and rude parents each year. I will try this next time ??

  6. Thanks Kelly, I have such a situation, and it happened again last week…….I became very upset and mentally vowed to not meet again with that person. Thank you for such a worthwhile strategy, which I am looking forward to trying, and, indeed, will meet with this person again. My warm wishes to you XXXX Margie

  10. Thank you Kelly, this is perfect timing for me.
I had a situation just last week where I knew I was being bullied, for the want of a better word, and although I was focused on maintaining boundaries of what was my issue and what was theirs I still felt my power and emotional energy zapped. It unsettled me for a couple of days.
I will be practicing this so next time I will be able to “bubble up”.
    Bless you

    • Hi Elke, thanks for your comment and insights. It’s amazing how much we can use tools like this to change the energy between us and other people so that they’re not able to bully us – or if they try, it’s like water off a duck’s back. So empowering!

  11. Thank you Kelly for this inspirational video.
It is imperative for me to do this at Christmas time. I love my 2 sisters in Brisbane & will travel from Melb on Sat to celebrate Christmas with them. I already feel anxious meeting with one sister & your insightful approach has empowered me already!
I wish you, Kelly a Safe and Joyful Christmas 2019 and a Wonderful year ahead.
    Best wishes,
    Jane

    • Fantastic MaryJane, I’m so glad to hear this is timely for you. Here’s to you staying in your own power and energy. An extra bonus is that this technique is also a wonderful way to practice being present/mindful.
